The Trinity (Conn.) College women's lacrosse team jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and withstood a comeback effort from the University of Mary Washington to down the Eagles, 13-5, on Saturday in the third round of the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse championship. UMW closes its season with a record of 15-5.

Trinity used a 5-0 run over 15:11 in the first half to turn a 1-1 tie into a 6-1 lead with 4:25 left before the break. Kiley Coffey scored the game's first goal 4:50 into the contest, but senior attacker Ashley Dacey (Round Hill, Va.) answered with the first Mary Washington goal at the 21:11 mark on a free-position shot.

The Bantams took the lead for good when senior co-captain midfielder Martha Griffin (Exeter, N.H.) fed sophomore attacker Allie Barrett (Concord, Mass.) for a goal with 19:34 remaining in the first stanza, while junior midfielder Karly Simpson (South Hadley, Mass.) scored two of the next four goals, and Griffin converted on a free-position shot to complete the 5-0 spurt.

Eagle freshman attacker Hope Lockwood (Baltimore, Md.) ended the 17:26 scoring drought for the visitors with a goal at the 3:45 mark, and Dacey scored on a free-position shot while Mary Washington had an extra attacker with 1:55 on the clock to round out the first-half scoring with Trinity ahead, 6-3.

The Bantams went back ahead by five goals early in the second frame when sophomore attacker Abby McInerney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Coffey each scored on free-position shots in the opening 3:17. Mary Washington freshman midfielder Mackenzie Maguire (Sparta, N.J.) assisted junior attacker Kelsey Vincent (Salisbury, Md.) on a goal with 23:46 left, and answered a Griffin tally with one of her won to make the score 9-5 with 15:23 left to play.

After a timeout, Trinity scored four goals to take command. Junior attacker Clare Lyne (Concord, Mass.) won the ensuing draw and the Bantams held the ball for nearly three full minutes before Lyne controlled a perfect high pass from behind the net from classmate Nicole Stauffer (Cheshire, Conn.) and quickly shot the ball into the net with 12:38 remaining. Coffey scored once and Barrett scored the final two of Trinity's six goals on free-position shots in the final 11:01 of the game.
