#14 UMW Women's Lax Tops Marymount, 8-5, in CAC Tourney First Round

The 14th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team overcame an early 3-1 deficit to defeat Marymount University, 8-5, on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 14-3 on the season, and will advance to the CAC Semifinals on Saturday.

The Saints opened the scoring 2:24 into the game, but UMW answered with a goal from Holly Hudson just 42 seconds later. Marymount then scored two straight to take a 3-1 lead with 16:26 remaining in the first.

The Eagles then used a pivotal stretch over the next 13 minutes, in which they scored four straight, to assume the lead. Junior Sabrina Elliott scored unassisted with 15:50 remaining to cut the deficit to one, and freshman Mackenzie Maguire tied the score with 6:48 to go.

The Eagles grabbed the lead with another Maguire tally just 15 seconds later on a Kirsten Littlefield assist, and extended the lead to 5-3 on a Hudson score exactly three minutes later. That lead stood until halftime.

Marymount opened the second half with a score with 21:34 left to cut the margin to 5-4, but UMW scored two straight to up the lead to three, at 7-4. Julia Albert scored on a Hudson pass with 14:26 left, and Elliott scored with 13:13 remaining.

The Saints scored the next goal, with 11:45 to play, but UMW capped the scoring with 1:17 left on a man-up score from Elliott, assisted by Maguire.

The Eagles led in shots, 28-14, and in ground balls, 25-18. The Eagles won 10 of 15 draw controls, and freshman goalie Hanna Ashby had four saves for UMW. Holly Reik had eight saves for Marymount.

UMW will advance to the CAC Semifinals on Saturday at St. Mary's College of Md. Game time has yet to be announced.
