#16 UMW Women's Lax Tops Roanoke, 17-6, on Saturday

Sophomore Holly Hudson scored four goals and added one assist, freshman Mackenzie Maguire scored three goals and added one assist, and sophomore Julia Albert scored three goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team over Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon, 17-6. The Eagles improve to 8-0 on the season.

Hudson, Maguire, and Emily Mott each scored goals in the first three minutes of the game to take an early 3-0 lead. Sabrina Elliot scored at the 22:20 mark on a free position shot, and Maguire scored on an assist from Kelsey Vincent at the 18:57 mark to jump to a 5-0 lead.

Roanoke responded a minute later to score their first goal of the game. The Eagles then reeled off five goals over the next five minutes from Julia Albert, Hudson, Mott, Paige Childers, and Vincent to take a 10-1 advantage. Roanoke scored with 12:29 remaining in the half to cut the lead to eight, at 10-2.

Maguire and Albert scored again before Roanoke added another to make the score 12-3. The Eagles ended the half with a ten goal lead when Vincent scored another goal with one second left on the clock.

In the second half, Hudson scored two goals in the first six minutes, while Albert scored again at the 21:01 mark. Savannah Boyd capped the scoring for the Eagles when she scored off an assist from Nikki Lind with 16:57 left to take a commanding 17-3 lead. Roanoke scored the final three goals of the game.

Mary Washington led in shots 31-19, and in draw controls, 18-6. The Eagles also led in ground balls 19-18. Kelsey Welsh started in goal for the Eagles and recorded five saves, while allowing just three goals in the first 39:05 of action. Hannah Ashby finished the game in goal for the Eagles, saving eight shots and allowing three goals.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday when they visit Catholic University at 4:00 pm.
