#18 UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Southern Virginia, 19-5, in CAC Opener

The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Southern Virginia University in its Capital Athletic Conference opener, 19-5, on Saturday in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 6-0 on the season.

UMW opened the scoring just 21 seconds into the game, with a score from Paige Childers. Less than a minute later, the Eagle lead grew to 2-0 on a Mackenzie Maguire score assisted by Julia Albert. Albert scored with 27:17 left on a pass from Emily Mott, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

Sophomore Holly Hudson scored a pair of goals next, the first with 23:34 left and the next at 14:56. The Knights then scored a pair of goals to close the gap to 5-2, but the Eagles reeled off seven straight goals to close the half.

Nikki Lind scored on a free position shot with 9:36 left, and Hudson followed 21 seconds later with her third goal. Mott scored with 5:34 remaining, and Maguire scored a pair of goals 37 seconds apart. Mott scored with 58 seconds left, and Maguire followed with another goal to cap the scoring for the half with 49 seconds left, as UMW led, 12-2, at intermission.

Southern Virginia opened the second half with a pair of goals. Lind answered with two goals, and UMW's lead stood at 14-4 with 22:47 left. Casey Ryan, Savannah Boyd, and Kristen Kunaniec upped the lead to 17-4 before the hosts scored again. Senior Ashlyn Dacey scored a pair of free position shots to push the final to 19-5.

The Eagles led in shots, 26-9, and ground balls, 26-12. The Eagles won 15 of 27 draw controls, and sophomore Kelsey Welsh had two saves and freshman Hanna Ashby added three in 54 minutes of relief.

UMW will return to action this Wednesday when they host Randolph-Macon at 3:30 p.m.
