Maguire, Hudson Lead #18 UMW Women's Lax Past Meredith, 21-11

Freshman Mackenzie Maguire scored six goals and added three assists, and sophomore Holly Hudson added five goals and one assist, to lead the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 21-11 victory at Meredith University on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 5-0 on the season.

Hudson put the Eagles out in front with 26:55 remaining in the first, and Maguire added another 1:25 later on a Sabrina Elliott assist. Five minutes into the game, Meredith cut the deficit to 2-1, but Julia Albert scored one minute later to move the lead to 3-1. Elliott scored with 22:51 left on an Emily Mott feed, but Meredith answered to trim the lead to 4-2.

From there, the Eagles scored four straight, with Hudson scoring twice and Maguire scoring once and assisting Hope Lockwood on another. Meredith scored twice in the final minute, only to see Mott score on an Albert feed with 17 seconds left. UMW led at halftime, 9-4.

UMW scored four straight to open the second half. Mott scored on a Maguire assist with 24:36 remaining, and Maguire scored on a Hudson pass with 22:55 left. Paige Childers scored less than a minute later, and Maguire scored on a free position shot with 20:46 left.

Meredith scored a pair of goals to move the score to 13-6, but the Eagles followed with Ashlyn Dacey, Maguire, and Katherine Lambert scoring to move the lead to 10. Meredith scored five straight to cut the deficit to five, but the Eagles ended the game on a 5-0 run, with Hudson scoring twice in the run.

Mary Washington led in shots, 37-19, and in draw controls, 20-14. The Eagles also led in ground balls, 25-18. Hannah Ashby and Kelsey Welsh split time in goal for UMW, with Welsh making a pair of saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Southern Virginia University in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 1:00 p.m.
