Balanced Attack Leads UMW Women's Lax to 16-6 Victory at Guilford on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team broke a tight contest open in the second half, with seven players scoring a pair of goals, in a 16-6 victory at Guilford College on Sunday in North Carolina. The Eagles improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Quakers opened the scoring less than a minute into the game on a free position shot. The Eagles tied the score with 24:58 left, when Emily Mott scored on a free position shot, and took the lead five minutes later on a Mackenzie Maguire score. Freshmen Paige Childers and Savannah Boyd each scored to give the Eagles a 4-1 lead midway through the first half.

The Quakers then scored three of the next four goals, with one from UMW's Childers mixed in, to cut the Eagle lead to 5-4 with 4:31 remaining before intermission. Eagles Julia Albert and Boyd each scored to push the lead to three, before Guilford capped the scoring to run the halftime margin to 7-5.

The second half saw the Eagles break away for the comfortable win. Holly Hudson scored with 28:15 left in the game, starting a streak of nine straight UMW scores. Hope Lockwood added a pair of scores in the following minutes, followed by goals from Mott, Albert, Maguire, Hudson, Casey Ryan, and Nikki Lind.

Guilford scored the game's final goal to cut the final margin to 16-6.  Seven different Eagles scored a pair of goals, with Mott leading the way by adding three assists.

The Eagles led in shots, 33-16, and ground balls, 25-23, while forcing 24 Quaker turnovers. Kelsey Welsh had two saves and Hanna Ashby added five in goal for UMW, while Guilford saw Sammi Milbourn make nine stops.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Meredith University at 4:00 p.m.
