UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Lynchburg, 11-5, in Wednesday Action

Sophomore Holly Hudson, junior Sabrina Elliott, and freshman Mackenzie Maguire scored three goals apiece, ads the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team broke open a close game in the second half to defeat Lynchburg College, 11-5, on Wednesday night in Lynchburg. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Eagles raced ahead at the start, with Hudson scoring on a free position shot with 24:24 remaining in the first. Julia Albert scored one minute later to push the lead to 2-0, and Elliott scored less than a minute after that to up the advantage to 3-0.

After Lynchburg found their first goal of the day, Maguire scored on an Elliott assist to move the score to 4-1 with 10:28 before halftime. But Lynchburg scored the final two goals of the half, and UMW enetered intermission with a 4-3 lead.

In the second half, it was all Mary Washington, as Maguire scored on an Emily Mott feed with 27:07 remaining. After a Hornets score moved the margin to 5-4, the Eagles scored five straight to put the game away.

Hope Lockwood scored on a free position shot with 20:42 left, and Elliott scored on another free position attempt six minutes later. Maguire scored unassisted with 7:11 to play, and Hudson scored on a free position shot with 6:38 on the clock.

Elliott capped the streak with another free position score with 4:03 left. After a Lynchburg goal, Hudson capped the scoring with five seconds left, unassisted.

The Eagles led in shots, 24-14, and ground balls, 19-16. The Eagles forced 25 LC turnovers, and won 11 of 18 draw controls. Kelsey Welsh had seven saves for the Eagles, while Treva Tyson had eight saves for Lynchburg.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Guilford College at 4:00 p.m.
