Hudson, Maguire Lead UMW Women's Lax Past Shenandoah, 13-4, in Season Opener

Sophomore Holly Hudson scored three goals and added a pair of assists, and freshman Mackenzie Maguire added three as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team downed Shenandoah University, 13-4, on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles move to 1-0 on the year.

Hudson opened the scoring for the Eagles less than three minutes into play, and Kelsey Vincent added another score two minutes later to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. After a Shenandoah score cut the deficit to 2-1, the Eagles reeled off seven straight goals to take control.

Sabrina Elliott scored with 19:30 left, followed by Hope Lockwood with 15:59 remaining. Maguire then scored two straight to move the score to 6-1. Savannah Boyd netted her first collegiate goal, and Maguire added another to move the score to 8-1 with 3:15 left in the half.

Vincent closed the first half scoring, giving the Eagles a 9-1 lead at intermission.

In the second half, the Hornets started the scoring in the opning minute, but Hudson answered, followed by goals from Julia Albert and Allison Davis, pushing the advantage to 12-2. Shenandoah then tallied a pair of goals to cut the margin to 12-4 midway through the second half.

Hudson capped the scoring with 9:17 remaining, giving UMW a nine-goal victory in their opener.

Mary Washington led in shots, 36-23, while Shenandoah led in draw controls, 14-5. Kelsey Welsh had 10 saves and Hannah Ashby two for the Eagles in goal. Rachel Levy had six saves and Brittany Bain eight for the Hornets.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Washington & Lee University at 1:00 p.m.
