UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at #9 Salisbury, 6-4, in CAC Semifinals on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a tough 6-4 decision at ninth-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals. The Eagles close the season with a record of 10-8.

Salisbury scored first, netting a goal with 21:17 remaining, but the Eagles countered with 13:10 left on a score from Corinne Wiederkehr, on an Ashlyn Dacey assist. The Sea Gulls scored three straight to take a 4-1 advantage, but the Eagles closed the half on a Wiederkehr score with five seconds left on an Emily Mott pass.

The strong defensive efforts on both sides, as well as a slow tempo, continued in the second half. Salisbury extended its lead to 5-2 with 27:22 remaining before Dacey scored unassisted with 19:04 left to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Sea Gulls scored with four minutes later to return the margin to three, before freshman Holly Hudson scored unassisted with 7:45 to go. The score remained 6-4 until the final horn. UMW had several chances in the waning minutes, but one shot sailed wide and another hit the goal post.

Salisbury led in shots, 14-9, and in ground balls, 14-11. Senior goalie Taylor Paige made a pair of saves for the Eagles, while Mo Sunderland added two ground balls and four draw controls. Maiah Bartlett added two ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Wiederkehr scored twice for UMW, while Dacey added a goal and an assist.

The Eagles close with a 10-8 record, and eclipse the 10-win plateau for the tenth straight year.
