UMW Women's Lacrosse Overcomes Late Deficit to Top Christopher Newport, 11-10, in CAC Tourney First Round

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team overcame a 10-7 deficit in the final 12 minutes to defeat Christopher Newport University, 11-10, in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday in Newport News. The Eagles improve to 10-7 on the season.

The Eagles started the game by jumping ahead, 3-0, on goals from Holly Hudson at 29:23, Kate Smucker at 28:18, and Sabrina Elliott at 26:28. The Captains rallied back, making a run of their own, scoring five straight over a 16-minute span, to take a 5-3 advantage. The Eagles cut the deficit to 5-4 as Ashlyn Dacey scored on a man-up opportunity with eight minutes remaining, and the score stood at 5-4 at halftime.

CNU started the second half with a score to build its lead to 6-4, before Smucker scored with 27:55 left. The Captains grew the lead to 8-5 with a pair of scores, before Mo Sunderland stemmed the tide with 20:34 remaining.

Christopher Newport would score two of the next three goals, with Hudson scoring with 16:16 left to take a 10-7 lead, but the Eagles began their comeback shortly thereafter. Dacey scored with 11:50 remaining, and Elliott scored with 7:57 left on an Emily Mott assist. Dacey tied the score with 4:40 to go, and team scoring leader Corinne Wiederkehr found the game winner with 1:21 to play on a Mott assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 35-18, and both teams had 22 ground balls. Senior Taylor Paige had five saves in goal for UMW, while Mott added seven ground balls and Sunderland seven draw controls.

Dacey had three goals to lead the Eagles, while Hudson, Elliott and Smucker had two apiece in the balanced attack.

The Eagles will advance to the CAC semifinals on Saturday at top-seeded Salisbury University. Game time is set for 12:30 p.m.
