UMW Women's Lax Tops Colorado College, 9-7, on Senior Day

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team raced out to an 8-2 halftime lead in downing Colorado College, 9-7, on Saturday at the Battleground. With a nonconference win on Senior Day, the Eagles improve to 7-7 on the year.

Sabrina Elliott opened the scoring with 24:48 remaining in the first half, on an assist from senior Corinne Wiederkehr.  Colorado College tied the contest at the 23:07. The Eagles responded by powering in five straight goals of their own. Goals in this stretch came from Wiederkehr, Elliott, Kate Smucker, and Kara Hogan.

Colorado College threw in another goal with 5:22 left in the first half to bring the score to 7-2. The Eagles responded once again as Smucker assisted Hogan with 10 second left in the half to increase their lead to six.

In the second half, Colorado College scored with 23:23 remaining. The Eagles scored a minute later on a Holly Hudson free position shot to regain a six goal lead.  Colorado College proceeded to score four goals in a span of 17 minutes. The Eagles had many key defenses stops down the stretch to put Colorado's comeback to a halt.

UMW led in shots, 23-21, and in ground balls, 25-24. Senior Taylor Paige recorded 12 saves in the win. Elliot, Hogan, and Smucker led the Eagles with two goals apiece. Wiederkehr added a goal, two assists and collected six ground balls.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Wesley College at 4:00 PM.
