UMW Women's Lax Falls to St. Mary's, 6-5, in Wednesday CAC Tilt

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 6-5 decision to visiting St. Mary's College on Wednesday at the Battleground in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday.

In a low scoring affair that saw 37 total shots in the game, the Seahawks opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the opening 6:40 of play. UMW's Corinne Wiederkehr got the Eagles on the board with 13:58 remaining to cut the deficit to 2-1.

After a Seahawk goal with 1:49 left in the half, Kelsey Vincent again cut the deficit to one for the Eagles, scoring on a Mo Sunderland assist with 20 seconds remaining in the half. The Seahawks led, 3-2, at halftime.

In the second half, The Seahawks returned the lead to two with a score two minutes into play. Twenty seconds later, Sunderland scored unassisted to cut the score to 4-3, and Ashlyn Dacey scored with 23:32 left to tie the score on a free position shot.

The score stood tied for 10 minutes, until St. Mary's goals with 13:50 and 13:00 left gave the guests a 6-4 lead. Dacey scored with 11:41 remaining to cut the deficit to 6-5, but UMW was unable to find the tying tally.

Dacey led the Eagles with two goals, while Sunderland added a goal and an assist. UMW led in shots, 22-15, and St. Mary's led in ground balls, 18-17. Taylor Paige made eight saves in goal for the Eagles, while Maiah Bartlett had four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Colorado College at 4:00 p.m. for senior day.
