UMW Women's Lax Falls at CNU, 15-12, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 15-12 decision at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday. The Eagles drop to 6-5 on the season.

In a first half that saw several runs, the Eagles started first, scoring the first three goals of the game. Mo Sunderland started the scoring with the first of her five goals with 27:08 remaining. Ashlyn Dacey and Kate Smucker followed, and UMW led, 3-0. The Captains responded with five straight scores, but then UMW scored three more in a row, from Sunderland, Corinne Wiederkehr, and Smucker, to give UMW a 6-5 lead. The Captains scored with 3:57 left, but Smucker answered with 2:55 to go give the Eagles a 7-6 halftime edge.

In the second, Wiederkehr and Sunderland scored to lift UMW's lead to 9-6, but the Captains tied the score with three straight goals. Sunderland scored again with 20:57 left, but the Captains scored four of the next five goals to take the lead for good. Sunderland scored a man down goal with 17:35 left, and Dacey scored with 10:07 remaining.

Sunderland scored five for the Eagles, with Smucker adding three. The Captains led in shots, 30-29, and in ground balls, 17-11. Taylor Paige had two saves and Kelsey Welsh six for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host York College at 1:00 p.m.
