UMW Women's Lax Tops Frostburg, 16-8, to Remain Unbeaten in CAC Play

Sophomore Kate Smucker scored three goals and added three assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 Capital Athletic Conference win over Frostburg State University on Saturday at the Battleground. Corinne Wiederkehr and Mo Sunderland each ahd four goals for UMW.

The Eagles struck quickly to gain the lead, as Wiederkehr scored just five seconds into play, but FSU regrouped to score three of the next four goals of the game to take a 3-2 lead. From there, the first half belonged to UMW, as the Eagles scored four straight, including a pair from Sunderland, to take a 6-3 lead. Frostburg scored in the final minutes to cut the halftime deficit to 6-4.

The Eagles took charge in the second half, scoring the first eight goals of the half, including two each from Wiederkehr, Sunderland, and Holly Hudson. Frostburg again scored three of four in a run to cut the deficit to 15-7, but Kelsey Vincent capped the scoring for UMW with 1:22 left. Frostburg scored in the final minute to cut the final to 16-8.

The Eagles led in shots, 33-18, and ground balls, 22-14. Taylor Paige had two saves and Rachel Lynch three in goal for UMW.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host Washington College at 4:00 pm.
