UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls to #12 Catholic, 19-14, on Wednesday at the Battleground

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team fell short 19-14 to #12 Catholic University on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 5-2 on the season.

The Eagles came out strong, taking a 6-2 lead on goals from Corinne Wiederkehr, Ashlyn Dacey, Emily Atkinson, and Holly Hudson. Catholic responded to the Eagles' run to tie the score at 9-9 at the half.

In the second half, UMW and Catholic traded goals for the first eight minutes. Catholic scored quickly to bring the score to 10-9 before UMW regained the lead at 11-10 on goals from Atkinson and Wiederkehr. Catholic then scored five goals of their own to take the lead at 15-11. Hudson added another for the Eagles to cut the deficit to three. Just a minute later, Wiederkehr scored to make the score 15-13 with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.

Catholic answered with two more goals to extend the lead to four. Scoring for the Eagles was capped by Emily Mott with three minutes remaining. Catholic tallied two more goals in the finals minutes to seal the victory.

Mary Washington led in shots 36-29, and in ground balls, 15-10. Taylor Paige recorded seven saves on the day. Hudson had four goals and an assist, Wiederkehr had four goals, Atkinson had 3 goals, and Ashlyn Dacey, Mo Sunderland, and Mott each recorded goals for the Eagles. Madeline Wilson led Catholic with five goals.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Frostburg St. at 3:00 PM.
