UMW Women's Lacrosse Races to 16-3 Win Over Southern Virginia in CAC Opener

The University of Mary Washington raced out to a 12-2 halftime lead in downing Southern Virginia University, 16-3, on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-1 overall, and 1-0 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Senior Corinne Wiederkehr opened the scoring at 28:21 remaining on an Emily Atkinson assist, and Kate Smucker scored on a Wiederkehr pass at 27:05 left. The Eagles scored with goals from Ashlyn Dacey with 25:09 left, Mo Sunderland with 24:14 left, and Katherine Lambert with 23:37 left to run the score to 5-0.

After a Knights goal, Holly Hudson and Kara Hogan scored to push the score to 7-1. Southern Virginia scored again with 21:01 remaining to cut the deficit to 7-2, but the Eagles scored the final five goals of the half.

Lambert and Wiederkehr opened the run with goals, and were followed by Sabrina Elliott, Hogan, and Melissa Vinall. The Eagles led, 12-2, at intermission.

In the second half, Peyton Murray scored less than two minutes into the half, and Maiah Bartlett scored with 24:14 left, before SVU scored again, cutting the lead to 14-3. The Eagles added second half scores from Anna Kumor and Katie Rauchwarg to cap the scoring.

UMW led in shots, 26-9, and ground balls, 14-6. The Eagles were 4-4 on clears, while the Knights went 4-9. The Eagles led in draw controls, 16-5.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 7:00 p.m.
