Wiederkehr's Six Points Leads UMW Women's Lax Past Guilford, 17-2

Senior attacker Corinne Wiederkehr scored four goals and added a pair of assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 17-2 win at Guilford College on Monday in Greensboro, N.C. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season.

After the Quakers opened the scoring, UMW scored five straight goals to take command. Freshman Holly Hudson tied the score two minutes into play, and was followed 1:27 later by junior Ashlyn Dacey.

Wiederkehr then scored a pair of goals, with one from senior Emily Atkinson coming between the two, and the Eagles led, 5-1, with 16:56 left in the first half. Guilford again scored to cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Eagles would no0t allow a score for the final 44:49 of action, and raced out to the 17-2 win.

The Eagles closed the half on a 5-0 run, led by a pair of Hudson goals, and UMW led, 10-2, at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles used two goals each from Wiederkehr, Kate Smucker, and Jillian Henry, with one from Jamie Dillon for the 15-goal cushion.

UMW led in shots, 25-11, and in ground balls, 20-16. Taylor Paige and Kelsey Welsh each had three saves and Rachel Lynch one for UMW in goal. Smucker had three goals and an assist, and Hudson added three for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host Southern Virginia University at 1:00 p.m. in the Capital Athletic Conference opener.
