Atkinson's Five Scores Leads UMW Women's Lax Past Lynchburg, 16-8

Senior midfielder Emily Atkinson scored five goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-8 victory over Lynchburg College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground.

Atkinson started the proceedings with a free position goal with 25:12 remaining in the first half. After a Lynchburg score to tie the game, freshman Holly Hudson scored to give UMW a 2-1 edge.

The Hornets then scored two goals in a 59 second span to take a 3-2 lead, but UMW answered with five straight goals to take the lead for good. Atkinson scored with 18:09 left and again with 15:24 to go in the half, and was followed by Ashlyn Dacey with 12:15 remaining.

Senior Corinne Wiederkehr netted a pair of goals, at 11:19 and again eight seconds laterm to give UMW a 7-3 lead. Lynchburg scored the next two goals to cut the deficit to 7-5, but senior Kara Hogan capped the first half scoring with 3:43 left to give UMW an 8-5 halftime lead.

The Eagles continued their momentum in the second half, scoring the first four tallies. Mo Sunderland scored with 24:43 left, and was followed by Atkinson one minute later. Wiederkehr scored with 20:19, and Emily Mott added another with 17:44 left to push the Eagle advantage to 12-5.

Lynchburg scored a pair of goals to trim the lead to 12-7, but Atkinson scored with 3:49 to go. Lynchburg scored again seconds later, but UMW scored three goals in the final 1:46, with Mott scoring twice and Sabrina Elliott in the final minute for the 16-8 win.

The Eagles led in shots, 39-22, and each team had 18 ground balls. Taylor Paige had three saves and Kelsey Welsh four for the Eagles in goal.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Sunday when they visit Greensboro College at 12:30 p.m.
