UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls to #12 Washington & Lee, 10-9, in Four Overtimes

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team overcame a 7-2 second half deficit to force overtime, but fell in the fourth extra period, 10-9, on Monday afternoon at a chilly Battleground.

The Generals, ranked 12th in the nation, came out strong, running up a 5-0 lead through the first 17 minutes of action. The Eagles got on the board with 12:36 left in the first half, as Emily Atkinson scored on a free position shot.

After the Generals added another goal, Corinne Wiederkehr added a goal on a Holly Hudson assist with 4:38 left in the half, and the score stood at 6-2 at halftime.

In the second, the Generals scored again to lift their advantage to 7-2, but UMW then started its comeback, scoring the next three goals. Sabrina Elliott scored with 18:04 left in regulation, followed by Hudson with 17:18 remaining. Wiederkehr scored with 12:29 left to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Washington and Lee scored with 10:54 remaining to stem the momentum, but the Eagles rallied with three goals in the final 5:18 to tie the score. Atkinson scored again with 5:19 left, and Hudson scored with 3:22 reamining to cut the deficit to one. Hudson scored the tying goal with just 19 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The Eagles scored first in the first extra frame, as Elliott scored with 40 seconds left on a free position shot. But W&L's Carly Taglienti found the tying score with four seconds left. After neither team would score in the next two extra periods, Hayley Soutter scored the game winner for the Generals with 2:15 left in the fourth overtime.

Mary Washington led in shots, 31-16, and in ground balls, 32-21. Taylor Paige had one save and Kelsey Welsh two in relief in goal for UMW. Hudson had three goals and an assist, and Atkinson two goals and an assist for the Eagles, while Soutter and Olivia Sisson each had three goals for Washington & Lee.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Lynchburg College at 3:30 p.m.
