UMW Women's Lax Opens With 15-6 Win at Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-1 halftime lead en route to a 15-6 season-opening win at Shenandoah University on Wednesday afternoon in Winchester, Va. Senior Corinne Wiederkehr scored four goals and added an assist in the victory.

Sophomore Emily Mott opened the scoring, 1:30 into the game, and senior Emily Atkinson scored less than a minute later to give UMW a 2-0 lead. Freshman Holly Hudson scored with 24:32 left, and junior Ashlyn Dacey followed with another with 9:35 left to give UMW a 4-0 lead.

Wiederkehr then scored with 8:57 to go, and sophomore Sabrina Elliott added another with 7:39 remaining. Wiederkehr and freshman Casey Ryan scored in the closing minutes of the half, before Shenandoah found the goal with nine seconds left to move the halftime score to 8-1.

Dacey scored again to open the second half, before Shenandoah scored twice to cut the score to 9-3. Atkinson scored for the second time, and, after another Hornets goal, Wiederkehr added her third tally with 18:41 left to give UMW an 11-4 lead.

Atkinson scored with 18:18 left, and Hudson and Wiederkehr followed with two more scores to push the Eagle advantage to 14-4 with 12:35 left. Dacey scored the Eagles' final score with 2:35 remaining, and UMW came away with a 15-6 win.

The Eagles led in shots, 39-23, and in ground balls, 11-10. The Eagles were able to limit SU to 11-22 on clear attempts, and Taylor Paige had seven saves and Kelsey Welsh three in goal for UMW.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Saturday when they host Washington & Lee University at 3:00 pm at the Battleground in the home opener.
