UMW Women's Lax Improves to 13-4 with CAC Tourney Win over Marymount

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team improved to 13-4 on the season with a 16-5 victory over Marymount University on Tuesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament. The Eagles will advance to second-seeded York College on Saturday in the CAC semifinals.

UMW jumped ahead early and never looked back, scoring the first 10 goals of the game. Senior Jenna Petrucelli opened the scoring with 25:15 left, and freshman Emily Mott added another with 19:29 left. Freshman Kelsey Vincent scored with 15:33 left on a free position shot, and Petrucelli added her second score just 15 seconds later to push the lead to 4-0.

Junior Corinne Wiederkehr and Petrucelli each scored twice in a 6:21 span to boost the lead to 8-0, and Angela Sperbeck and Emily Atkinson each scored to push the lead to 10-0. Marymount scored in the final minute to move the halftime score to 10-1.

The Saints picked up the offense to start the second half, scoring three of the first four goals of the half to cut the deficit to 11-4. Kelsey Vincent scored for UMW in the run. The Eagles then scored five straight over a 10-minute span, with Katie Williams, Mott, Ashlyn Dacey each scoring, with Megan Gersbeck capping the run with two goals.

The Saints scored with 1:32 remaining to close the final gap to 16-5. Petrucelli had four goals for UMW, while Mott added two goals and two assists.

The Eagles led in shots, 40-18, and in ground balls, 25-20. Taylor Paige had four saves and Kelly Dean three for UMW in goal, while Petrucelli led with four draw controls and five ground balls.

UMW will visit second-seeded York College in the CAC semifinals on Saturday, with a game time yet to be determined. The Spartans defeated the Eagles, 12-10, in overtime in the regular season meeting, also at York.
