Williams' Big Day Leads UMW Women's Lax Past Marymount, 17-9

Senior Katie Williams had a hand in 10 goals with four scores and six assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 17-9 win over Marymount University in the regular season finale on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 12-4 on the season, and 5-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Junior Corinne Wiederkehr scored the first of her four goals less than three minutes into play, but Marymount tied the score at 24:03. The Eagles then reeled off four straight goals, as Jenna Petrucelli and Wiederkehr scored on Williams assists, and Emily Atkinson and Wiederker followed to up the lead to 5-1 with 18:33.

After another Saints goal, Williams and Petrucelli scored as the teams traded goals. Williams and Petrucelli and Sabrina Elliott closed the half with goals to push the halftime margin to 10-4.

In the second half, Atkinson and Wiederkehr opened the scoring, and after a Marymount goal, the Eagles scored five straight. Williams opened the run with an unassisted tally, and senior Angela Sperbeck scored with 22:39 left. Williams, Paige Thumel, and Jamie Dillon followed to up the lead to 17-5, before the Saints scored four straight to close the game.

The Eagles led in shots, 29-14, and in ground balls, 22-21. UMW held an 18-10 lead in draw controls. Kelly Dean had one save and Taylor Paige three for the Eagles, while Megan Gersbeck and Petrucelli each had four draw controls.

The two teams will face off again on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. at the Battleground in the first round of the CAC Tournament.
