UMW Women's Lax Tops Wesley, 19-6, in CAC Tilt

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team used a balanced attack in defeating Wesley College, 19-6, on Wednesday at the Battleground. UMW improves to 11-4 overall, and 4-2 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles jumped ahead on a score from Corinne Wiederkehr in the opening minute, and led, 5-0, with 10 minutes elapsed, as Jenna Petrucelli scored twice, and Ashlyn Dacey and Mo Sunderland each added goals.

After a Wesley goal, UMW answered with the next six goals. Angela Sperbeck scored with 16:52 left, and was followed by Kara Hogan at 14:07. Emily Atkinson scored the next two goals, and Lauren Clipper and Dacey closed the half scoring for UMW. Wesley added the final goal of the half, and the Eagles led, 11-2, at intermission.

In the second half, Katie Williams and Wiederkehr started the half scoring, but Wesley answered two of their own to cut the deficit to 13-4. Megan Gersbeck and Paige Thumel upped the lead to 15-4, and Kara Hogan scored four minutes later to move the score to 16-5. Freshmen Maiah Bartlett and Kate Smucker each scored, followed by sophomore Jamie Dillon to cap the scoring at 19-6.

The Eagles led in shots, and both teams grabbed 22 ground balls. The Eagles held a 17-10 advantage on draw controls. Wiederkehr had two goals and four assists to lead the offense, while Hogan, Petrucelli and Dacey each had two goals and two asists.

Taylor Paige had four saves and Kelly Dean two for the Eagles, while Jordyn Miller had three ground balls. Petrucelli scored seven draw controls.

The Eagles will host Marymount University in the regular season finale on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
