UMW Women's Lax Tops Guilford, 21-14, on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team scored the first three goals of the game and never looked back in a 21-14 win over Guilford College on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 10-4, while the Quakers fall to 9-5.

Senior Katie Williams started the scoring for the Eagles with 27:49 remaining, and junior Emily Atkinson scored a minute later. Williams moved the lead to 3-0 25:15 left in the first, and after a Quaker goal, Atkinson scored her second of the day with 21:48 left to move the lead to 4-1.

After Guilford closed the gap to 4-2, goals from Atkinson, Corinne Wiederkehr, and Jenna Petrucelli advanced the lead to 7-2. After a pair of Guilford scores, Jamie Dillon and Atkinson answerd, and Petrucelli added another before halftime, making the halftime score 10-6.

In the second half, the game went literally back and forth, as the teams alternated the first 12 goals of the half. Wiederkehr and Petrucelli each scored twice in that time frame to move the score to 16-12 with 13:53 left.

The Eagles put matters to rest by scoring six of the final eight goals of the game, led by a pair from Petrucelli, who led the team with six goals. Atkinson, Williams, and Wiedderkehr each scored four for UMW, with Wiederkehr adding a pair of assists.

UMW led in shots, 34-28, and in ground balls, 20-14. Taylor Paige had eight saves in goal for the Eagles, and Atkinson had five draw controls. Petrucelli added four ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wedenesday when they host Wesley College at 4:00 p.m.
