The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team roared back from an 8-5 second half deficit to defeat St. Mary's College, 15-11, in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in St. Mary's City. The Eagles improve to 9-4 overall and 3-2 in CAC play, while the Seahawks fall to 7-6 and 3-1.
Trailining 8-5 minutes into the second half, UMW would score 14 of the next 15 goals in the game, and held on for the fopur-point win. Junior Corinne Wiederkehr started the rush with three goals in a 1:36 span, with senior Katie Williams also scoring in the spurt.
After a SMC score, the Eagles took the lead for good with a goal from Emily Mott with 16:29 left. Megan Gersbeck, Jenna Petrucelli, Kelsey Vincent, and Wiederkehr followed suit, building the Eagle lead to 15-9. The Seahawks added a pair of late goals to push the final to 15-11.
Wiederkehr led all scorers with six goals and an assist, while Petrucelli scored three times for UMW, and Williams added three assists to her goal. Junior Taylor Paige made 15 saves in goal for the Eagles, and Emily Atkinson led with four draw controls. Mo Sunderland added a team-high four ground balls.
The Eagles will host Guilford College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in nonconference action.
