UMW Women's Lax Falls at #11 York, 12-10, in Overtime

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team held a slim lead throughout much of the contest, but fell, 12-10, in overtime at #11 York College on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. UMW falls to 8-4 on the season.

In a defensive-oriented first half, the Eagles built a 4-1 halftime advantage, with Jenna Petrucelli, Corrinne Wiederkehr, and Katie Williams scoring the first three goals of the game, and Emily Atkinson adding a late score.

Atkinson scored the first goal of the second half to build the lead to 5-1, before York closed the gap to 5-3 with a pair of goals. Petrucelli added her second score to push the score to 6-3, but the Spartans scored three straight to tie the score at six with 23:03 remaining.

Kara Hogan and Megan Gersbeck then scored to give the Eagles an 8-6 advantage, but York scored twice to tie the affair at 8-8 with 11:49 to play. Petrucelli and Atkinson scored again to build a 10-8 lead for UMW, but York scored twice to tie the score with five minutes left. The Eagles gained a clear in the final minute, but their last shot with three seconds left was saved, sending the game to overtime.

York scored twice in the extra period for the 12-10, despite being outshot, 3-2, in the extra frame. Taylor Paige had six saves and Kelly Dean one for the Eagles, while Paige and Katie Williams each had three ground balls to lead the Eagles. Petrucelli and Atkinson each had three draw controls. York was led by Erica Mulford's four goals and one assist.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College at 4:00 p.m.
