The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 decision at Catholic University on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Eagles fall to 5-2 on the season.

After allowing the opening score, UMW roared back with four goals from senior Jenna Petrucelli, and UMW gained a 5-4 lead on a Megan Gersbeck score with 10:59 remaining in the first half. The teams alternated goals until halftime, with Emily Atkinson and Gersbeck scoring to give UMW a 7-6 advantage at halftime.

In the second, Catholic tied the score first, but then the Eagles reeled off four straight goals to assume an 11-7 lead. Freshman Emily Mott scored twice, and was followed by goals from Maggie Nunn and Corinne Wiederkehr.

Atkinson scored again after a CUA goal to give UMW a 12-8 advantage with 9:33 to play, but the Cardinals rallied to score six of the game's final seven goals, including the game winner in the final minute.

Petrucelli scored five goals for UMW, while Mott, Gersbeck, and Atkinson each added two goals and one assist. Senior goalie Kelly Dean made 10 saves in goal for Mary Washington, while Atkinson and Nunn each had six ground balls.

Catholic led in shots, 33-32, while the Eagles held a 33-29 edge in ground balls. Catholic led in draw controls, 15-14.

Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they visit Frostburg State University in Capital Athletic Conference action starting at 3:00 p.m.
