UMW Women's Lax Edges Roanoke, 13-12, on Saturday Afternoon

Junior attacker Corinne Wiederkehr scored four goals and added two assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 13-12 win over Roanoke College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-1, while the Maroons fall to 2-3.

The Eagles scored two of the game's first three goals to take an early advantage. Katie Williams and Wiederkehr each scored in the first three minutes, but Roanoke answered with four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 16:37 remaining in the first half.

UMW responded with a pair of goals from Jenna Petrucelli at 15:05 and again at 10:09, and Sabrina Elliott scored with 6:18 left in the half to tie the score at 5-5. The teams each scored twice in the final minutes, with Petrucelli and Emily Atkinson scoring for UMW, and the game went to halftime tied at seven.

The Eagles forged ahead in the second, scoring the first two goals, from Atkinson at 27:11 and Williams at 24:09 remaining, to take a 9-7 advantage. The Maroons scored three of the next four goals to tie the score at 10 with 15:22 to play, but Wiederkehr scored again to put UMW ahead, 11-10, with 14:12 remaining.

Roanoke answered with a pair of goals, and led, 12-11, with 10 minutes left. Wiederkehr tied the score at 4:48 left, and then Kara Hogan found Megan Gersbeck for the eventual game winner with 3:27 on the clock.

The Eagles held a 28-26 shot advantage, and both teams had 18 ground balls. Roanoke held a 14-13 draw control advantage, as the statistics were as close as the final score. Kelly Dean had six saves in relief in goal, and Atkinson led UMW with four draw controls.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Friday when they host Bridgewater College at 4:00 p.m.
