Petrucelli's Seven Goals Lead UMW Women's Lax Past Lynchburg, 17-8

Senior attacker Jenna Petrucelli scored seven goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 victory at Lynchburg College on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 2-1.

The Eagles jumped ahead early, as Petrucelli and senior Katie Williams each scored in the opening minutes. After Lynchburg cut the deficit to 2-1, UMW's Emily Atkinson and Megan Gersbeck each scored to push the lead to 4-1. The Hornets rallied over the next six minutes to cut the score to 5-4, but UMW answered with five straight goals, coming from five different players (Williams, Atkinson, Emily Mott, Corinne Wiederkehr, and Petrucelli). Lynchburg capped the first half scoring to move the score to 10-5 in favor of the Eagles.

In the second, UMW scored seven of the first eight goals to put the game away. Williams scored in the opening minute, and Atkinson followed with her third goals, and then Petrucelli scored the final five goals for UMW. Lynchburg scored the final two goals.

In addition to Petrucelli's seven goals, Williams scored four and added one assist, and Atkinson added three goals. The Eagles led in shots, 29-14, and in ground balls, 17-12. Kelly Dean made two saves in goal for UMW in 43 minutes of action. Maggie Nunn led the Eagles with four ground balls and four caused turnovers.

Mary Washington will return to action on March 8 when they host Roanoke College at 2:00 p.m.
