UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at Washington & Lee, 12-5

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 12-5 decision at Washington & Lee University on Saturday. The Eagles fall to 1-1 on the season.

UMW started strong, taking a 2-1 lead after goals from Corrine Wiederkehr and Emily Atkinson in the opening 10 minutes. Atkinson scored again with 8:28 left to cut the Eagles' deficit to 4-3, but the Generals closed the half with a pair of goals to lead, 6-3, at halftime.

Washington & Lee scored four straight to open the second half to extend the lead to 10-3 before Katie Williams scored on a Jamie Dillon assist with 18:26 to play. Williams capped the scoring with 1:22 to play unassisted.

The Generals led in shots, 23-15, and in ground balls, 20-16. W&L led in draw cotrols, 12-7. Kelly Dean had one save in goal for the Eagles. Sabrina Elliott had four ground balls to lead UMW, while Jenna Petrucelli had four draw controls.

UMW will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Lynchburg College at 4:00 p.m.
