UMW Women's Lacrosse Opens Moore Era With 16-9 Win Over Shenandoah

The University of Mary Washington jumped out to a 9-0 lead, and went on to a 16-9 win over Shenandoah University on Tuesday in head coach Caitlin Moore's first game at her alma mater.

Senior attacker Jenna Petrucelli provided the spark on offense, scoring six goals, including the first two in the opening 1:30. Junior Corinne Wiederkehr then scored two goals, followed by Emily Atkinson and Katie Williams, to up the lead to 6-0 just three minutes into the game.

Wiederkehr followed with her third score before Petrucelli scored twice more to up the margin to 9-0 with 24:02 left in the first half. The Hornets scored three of the next four goals, and then the teams traded goals to halftime, with UMW holding a 13-6 advantage at intermission.

In the second, each team scored three times, with Angela Sperbeck scoring twice for the Eagles, and Petrucelli once. In addition to petrucelli's six goals, Wiederkehr posted three goals and one assist. Shenandoah was led by Samantha Sisson's four goals.

Mary Washington led in shots, 41-14, and in ground balls, 29-16. Taylor Paige had one save and Kelly Dean two for the Eagles, while Ashley Cross had 12 saves for the Hornets. The Eagles led in draw controls, 19-8, led by Atkinson's nine and Petrucelli's four.

"Total team effort", said Moore afterward. "We had an exceptional first half shooting, and the draws are a game changer. Emily and Jenna did a great job on the draws. Now we'll focus on the next one."

The Eagles will visit Washington & Lee University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
