UMW Women's Lax Tops Frostburg State in CAC Tourney First Round

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team defeated Frostburg State University, 22-3, on Tuesday in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. The Eagles improve to 11-6 on the season.

The Eagles scored the first 13 goals of the game, and led 13-1 at halftime. Senior Keller Torrey opened the scoring with 29:35 remaining, and Katie Williams scored again at 24:33. Emily Atkinson scored with 21:23 left, and Jenna Petrucelli added another with 20:09 left on the clock.

Sophomore Corinne Wiederkehr added a pair of free position goals to up the lead to 6-0, and Torrey scored againwith 17:18 remaining. Freshman Ashlyn Dacey scored two goals, followed by another Petrucelli score to open the lead up to 10-0 with 11:57 to go.

Hallie Ertel scored with 10:08 remaining, and Petrucelli followed with two more goals, before Frostburg scored to cap the first half scoring.

Megan Gersbeck scored twice to open the second half, and Petrucelli followed with two more goals, as the Eagles led, 17-2, with 20:09 left. The Eagles closed the game with four goals, from Jamie Dillon, Angela Sperbeck, Ertel, and Petrucelli.

Petrucelli scored seven goals for UMW, and Dacey added three. Torrey and Wiederkehr each had two goals and three assists. UMW led in shots, 42-12, and in ground balls, 22-11.

Kathryn Stiltz and Taylor Paige each had two saves for the Eagles, and Maggie Beglau one.

The Eagles will visit 10th ranked York College in the CAC semifinals on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
