UMW Women's Lacrosse Closes Regular Season with 12-8 Win Over Lynchburg

The University of Mary Washington defense limited visiting Lynchburg College to two second half scores, as the Eagles topped the Hornets, 12-8, on Saturday at the Battleground. UMW improves to 10-6 overall.

Senior Keller Torrey opened the scoring for the Eagles on a Corinne Wiederkehr assist less than two minuts into the game. Lynchburg tied the score four minutes later, but Torrey scored again at 20:47 to put UMW back on top. Wiederkehr scored just 24 seconds later to up the lead to 3-1, but Lynchburg scored 21 seconds after that to retuirn the deficit to one at 3-2.

Junior Megan Gersbeck scored on a Torrey pass with 18:47 left, but the Hornets tallied three straight goals in a 1:30 stretch to take a 5-4 lead with 14:23 left in the half. Freshman Ashlyn Dacey scored with 9:47 left, and junior Jenna Petrucelli put UMW back on top with 2:54 to go.

After Lynchburg tied the score with 2:34 remaining, the Eagles received late goals from Petrucelli and Katie Williams to take an 8-6 advantage to halftime.

The two teams traded goals twice to start the second half scoring, with Gersbeck and Wiederkehr netting UMW's points. Wiederkehr started a 3-0 run to close the game's scoring for UMW, as Dacey scored again with 8:46 left, and Petrucelli scored with 2:36 remaining for a 12-8 lead.

Petrucelli led the Eagles with three goals and an assist, while Wiederkehr and Torrey each had two goals and an assist. Senior Kathryn Stiltz had four saves for the Eagles, who also received four draw controls from sophomores Melissa Vinall and Emily Atkinson.

The eagles will open play in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament on Tuesday when they host Frostburg State University at the Battleground at 4:00 p.m.
