Petrucelli, Torrey Lead UMW Women's Lax Past Marymount, 19-11

Junior Jenna Petrucelli scored five goals and senior Keller Torrey added three goals and four assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 19-11 win at Marymount University in Capital Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in Arlington. The Eagles improve to 9-6 on the season, and 3-2 in league play.

After the Saints scored the game's first goal, UMW charged ahead with seven straight goals in an 11 minute span. Torrey started the run at 25:19 with an unassisted score. Petrucelli scored on a Katie Williams assist at 20:55, and junior Megan Gersbeck scored 26 seconds later on a free position shot.

Petrucelli scored one minute later at 19:26, and sophomore Corrine Wiederkehr scored at 18:36 to push the lead to 5-1. Sophomore Emily Atkinson scored with 16:25 remaining, and senior Katie Mastropaolo scored her first collegiate goal with 14:27 left to cap the streak. The two teams traded scores for the remainder of the half, with Torrey, Karlie Fuller, and Atkinson finding the nets for UMW, who led, 10-4, at halftime.

The Eagles pushed the lead to 13-4 with the first three goals of the second half, with Kara Hogan, Petrucelli, and Gersbeck doing the honors. After a Saints goal cut the deficit to 13-5, Gersbeck scored with 20:48 left, and freshman Jamie Dillon followed with her first goal with 17:18 remaining to push the lead to 15-5.

The Saints scored six of the next seven goals to draw to within 16-11, but the Eagles used goals from Petrucelli, Atkinson, and Torrey to cap an eight-goal victory.

The Eagles led in shots, 46-25, and in ground balls, 30-15. Kathryn Stiltz had 11 saves and Maggie Beglau none splitting time in the Eagle goal.

UMW will close the regular season on Saturday hosting Lynchburg College at 1:00 p.m.
