Petrucelli's Seven Scores Lead UMW Women's Lax Past Washington & Lee, 14-7

Junior Jenna Petrucelli continued her torrid scoring pace with seven goals to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win over Washington & Lee University on Sunday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-6 on the season.

Petrucelli, who scored 10 goals in UMW's Wednesday win over St. Mary's, opened the scoring 1:16 into the game. Junior Megan Gersbeck then scored on a Petrucelli assist with four minutes elapsed to up the margin to 2-0. After the Generals got on the board, Petrucelli scored on a Keller Torrey pass at 21:57, and Torrey scored on an Emily Atkinson assist at 17:33 to up the lead to 4-1.

The Generals scored three of the next four goals, with Atkinson adding one for the Eagles, to cut the deficit to 5-4, but Corinne Wiederkehr scored on a Torrey assist with 2:23 left in the half to give UMW a 6-4 halftime edge.

Petrucelli then opened the second half with her third score on a Katie Williams assist with 27:52 remaining, and Torrey scored on a free position shot with 20:44 left to expand UMW's lead to 8-4. The Generals scored twice to cut the deficit to 8-6, but UMW scored six of the final seven goals of the game for the win.

Petrucelli scored with 13:39 left, and Gersbeck scored twice more to advance the lead to 12-6. Petrucelli capped the run with another score with 5:41 left. After a W&L goal, Petrucelli scored twice in the final minutes for the 14-7 victory.

Petrucelli had sevn goals and an assist, Gersbeck scored three times, and Torrey had two goals and three assists for UMW. The Eagles led in shots, 29-19, and in ground balls, 21-18.Kathryn Stiltz had seven saves in goal for UMW.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Marymount University in a Capital Athletic Conference match starting at 4:00 p.m.
