UMW Women's Lax Falls to #11 York, 18-9

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-9 decision to #11 York College on Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in league play.

The Eagles jumped ahead early as sophomore Emily Atkinson scored the game's first two goals, at 28:45 and again at 21:41. The Spartans responded with five straight goals over the next seven minutes to take a 5-2 lead. UMW scored at 13:34 as senior Keller Torrey found the nets on an Atkinson assist. Megan Gersbeck scored on a Corinne Wiederkehr pass at 9:06 to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.

After York scored, Angela Sperbeck scored on a Gersbeck assist to again cut the deficit to one. The Spartans closed the half on a 3-1 run, with Wiederkehr tallying UMW's point in that stretch.

In the second half, York opened with two goals to run the score to 11-6. Gersbeck scored just over two minutes elapsed in the half, but York scored three straight to up its lead to 14-7 with 22:57 left. The Eagles responded with goals from Jenna Petrucelli and Ashlyn Dacey to cut the deficit to six, but the Spartans closed the game on a 4-0 run to cap the scoring at 18-9.

York led in shots, 40-18, and in ground balls, 18-17. Senior goalie Kathryn Stiltz had 15 saves for Mary Washington, who also saw a team-high three ground balls from Samantha Ehlers and Priscilla Smith. Gersbeck and Atkinson each had two goals and an assist for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when the Eagles host St. Mary's College at 4:00 p.m.
