Petrucelli's OT Score Lifts UMW Women's Lax Past Babson, 19-18, in OT

Junior midfielder Jenna Petrucelli scored the eventual game-winning goal with 2:15 remaining in the first overtime to lead the #20 University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 19-18 victory over Babson College on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 4-4 on the season.

In a high scoring affair, the Eagles started the fireworks as Petrucelli scored in the opening minute. The Beavers answered with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead, but UMW's Corinne Wiederkehr and Keller Torrey netted goals to give UMW a 3-2 edge. Babson answered with four straight goals to lead, 6-3, with 16:48 remaining in the first half.

Petrucelli and junior Megan Gersbeck scored at 16:19 and 15:49 to quickly bring the deficit back to one at 6-5, but Babson scored the next goal to take a 7-5 lead. After Gersbeck scored on an eight meter shot, The Beavers then scored three straight to up the lead to 10-6 with 11:48 remaining.

Torrey scored on a Wiederkehr assist with 9:35 to play, but Babson again answered with two scores to up the lead to 12-7 with seven minutes left. UMW closed the half with three straight goals in the last four minutes, as Katie Williams scored with three minutes left, and Wiederkehr added two in the final two minutes to push the halftime score to 12-10.

Gersbeck and Torrey quickly tied the score to start the second, as UMW took just 52 seconds to draw even. The two teams traded goals for the next several minutes with the Eagles taking a 15-14 lead on a Keller Torrey goal with 22:25 left. Babson retied the score at 15, but Gersbeck scored with 19:33 left to put the Eagles ahead.

Torrey and Williams added goals to boost the Eagles' lead to 18-15 with 14 minutes left, but Babson scored with 11, seven and one minute left to tie the score and send the game to overtime. In the extra period, Petrucelli found the lone score in the two extra periods for the victory.

Torrey led the Eagles with six goals and three assists, while Gersbeck added five goals and one assist. Wiederkehr scored three goals and four assists, and three times for the Eagles. Rachel Secrist had four goals and five assists for Babson.

Babson held a 33-32 edge in shots, and each team picked up 14 ground balls. Senior Kathryn Stiltz had 12 saves in goal for UMW.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host Frostburg State University in a Capital Athletic Conference showdown starting at 3:00 p.m.
