The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 9-5 first half advantage en route to a 15-14 victory over Roanoke College on Wednesday afternoon in Orlando, Fla. The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season.

The Eagles opened the scoring with 27:22 remaining, as senior Keller Torrey scored a man-up goal on a free position shot. After the Maroons scored twice to take the lead, Torrey scored again to tie the score, and Karlie Fuller put the Eagles ahead, 3-2, with 18:51 remeining in the half.

The teams continued to trade goals until the Eagles went ahead, 5-4, on an Emily Atkinson man-up score with 13:46 left. The Eagles continued to score five of the last six goals of the half, including two more form Atkinson and two from junior Angela Sperbeck, to lead, 9-5, at halftime.

In the second half, the Maroons scored first, but the Eagles answered with scores from Sperbeck and Ashlyn Dacey to push the lead to 11-6. Corrine Wiederkehr scored with 15:40 remaining to give UMW a 12-7 lead, but Roanoke would go on to score six of the next eight goals in the game to cut the deficit to 14-13 with 8:15 remaining.

Keller Torrey capped the Eagles scoring with a needed insurance goal with 3:31 left. Roanoke scored a minute later to cut the deficit to one, and had  ashot with 18 seconds left, but UMW goalie Kathryn Stiltz came away with the key save.

Atkinson led the Eagles with four goals, while Torrey had three goals and one assist, and Sperbeck and Wiederkehr each had three goals. Stiltz made 10 saves for Mary Washington.

The Eagles will be back in action on March 13 for the home opener when the Eagles host Messiah College at 4:00 p.m.
