#13 UMW Women's Lacrosse Tops Wesley, 17-1, in CAC Opener

Junior Megan Gersbeck scored four goals and two assists and junior Katie Williams added four goals and one assist to lead the 13th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 17-1 win at Wesley College in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener on Sunday. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the year.

Sophomore Emily Atkinson opened the scoring for UMW at 26:57, and Williams followed with her first score just 11 seconds later. Freshman Ashlyn Dacey then scored two straight to up the lead to 4-0, and Keller Torrey followed with another.

Gersbeck then scored two straight, and Torrey scored again to up the lead to 8-0. Kara Hogan scored twice and Gersbeck added another to cap the first half scoring with UMW leading, 10-0.

Williams scored three times in the second half, with Gersbeck, Hogan, and Angela Sperbeck adding solo goals as the Eagles won, 17-1. The Eagles led in shots, 44-6, and in ground balls, 38-17. Torrey had four assists and Sperbeck three for UMW.

Kathryn Stiltz had one save in the first half and Taylor Paige and Maggie Beglau split time in the second, with Paige recording one save. The Eagles won 11 draw controls, with Karlie Fuller claiming four.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Shenandoah University at 4:00 p.m.
