#12 UMW Women's Lax Falls at #11 York in CAC Semifinals, 9-6

Eleventh-ranked York College raced out to an 8-2 halftime edge and held on for a 9-6 victory over 12th ranked Mary Washington in a Capital Athletic Conference semifinal on Tuesday in York, Pa. The Eagles fall to 13-4 on the season.

The Spartans scored the first three goals of the game, but UMW freshman Mo Sunderland scored on a Catherine Kennedy assist with 22:28 remaining in the first half to cut the deficit to 3-1. From there, the Spartans took over, netting the game's next four goals to up its lead to 7-1 with 14:37 left in the half. Sophomore Jenna Petrucelli added another goal for UMW just 17 seconds later to cut the deficit back to 7-2, and York added the final goal of the half to move the margin to 8-2 at intermission.

UMW got back into the game by scoring four straight to open the second half. Kennedy scored on a Keller Torrey assist with 27:57 left, and Maggie Nunn scored on a Torrey feed one minute later. The Eagles cut the deficit to 8-5 at 23:37 on an unassisted Kennedy score, and then moved the score to 8-6 at 11:58 to play on a goal by Megan Gersbeck.

But the Spartans scored the only goal of the final 12 minutes, taking a 9-6 win. York led in shots, 22-17, and in ground balls, 15-9. Junior Kathryn Stiltz had six saves in goal for UMW, who now must await a possible NCAA Tournament at-large berth next month.
