The 20th-ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-10 decision at ninth ranked Catholic University in the first round of the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse tournament on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. The Eagles close the season with a record of 13-8.

Catholic jumped ahead early, scoring three times before UMW even produced a shot. The Eagles battled to stay close, but the Cards used three free-position shot goals to open up a 10-4 lead at halftime.

The second half saw the Cardinals net the first two goals, but UMW rebounded to cut the score to 13-8 with 17:05 remaining, thanks to a pair of goals from junior Allie Kimmelman and single tallies from Keller Torrey and Megan Gersbeck. But Catholic had the final answer, scoring five of the final seven goals of the game for the 18-10 win.

Catholic led in shots, 38-26, and had 22 ground balls to 17 for UMW. Catholic won 16 of 30 draw controls in the game, and won the turnover battle, 17-12. UMW sophomore Kathryn Stiltz made 13 saves for the Eagles, while Catholic's Gabby Sena had 11 stops.

Mary Washington was led by senior Erin Murphy, who had three goals, while Kimmelman scored twice and had one assist and Torrey scored twice. Catholic was led by Mary Swarthout's six goals.

Catholic will advance to the second round, where they will face top-ranked The College of New Jersey on Saturday.
