#10 Williams Women's Lax Edges #17 UMW, 9-8

Seventeenth-ranked Mary Washington jumped out to a 7-3 second half lead, but 10th-ranked Williams scored six of the final seven goals of the game in a 9-8 win over the Eagles in top-20 NCAA women's lacrosse on Tuesday at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 6-4.

Williams started the scoring with two goals less than 30 seconds apart with four minutes elapsed in the game. But the Eagles responded, scoring the next four goals, including two from Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) and one each from Keller Torrey (Roswell, Ga., Centennial) and Erin Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Bishop Sullivan). The Eagles held a 4-3 halftime advantage.

UMW built its lead to 7-3 by scoring the first three goals of the second half, from Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) at 26:46, Murphy at 25:04, and Callison again at 24:42. The Ephs scored the next two goals to cut the deficit to 7-5, and after another score from Erin Murphy, netted the last four scores of the game.

Kennedy led the Eagles with two goals and three assists, while Murphy scored a team-high three goals. The Ephs outshot the Eagles, 30-25, and had a 28-24 advantage on ground balls. Junior Danielle Guigli (Wellesley, Mass., Wellesley) had a solid effort in goal for UMW, making 11 saves.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they host St. Mary's College at 1:00 p.m.
