Kennedy, Torrey Lead #16 UMW Women's Lax to 17-8 Win at Guilford
Junior All-American Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) scored five goals and sophomore Keller Torrey (Roswell, Ga., Centennial) added a career-high six assists to lead the 16th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 17-8 win at Guilford College in both teams' season opener on Saturday. Senior Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) added three scores and junior Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) added a goal and three assists for UMW.

Mary Washington started strong, as Kennedy scored the first two goals of the game. After a Quaker goal, UMW reeled off seven straight goals, with Wallis scoring all three of her goals in the run. Guilford closed the gap to 9-3 at halftime.

The second half saw UMW score the first four goals, with junior Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) and Kennedy scoring twice. Kennedy and senior Erin Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Bishop Sullivan) each scored to up the margin to 15-4, and Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) and Addie Hawley (Lutherville, Md., St. Pauls) added late goals for the 17-8 final.

The Eagles outshot Guilford, 33-23, and had 24 ground balls. Junior Danielle Guigli (Wellesley, Mass., Wellesley) had two saves and sophomore Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga., Walton) added four for UMW, while Liza Mettler had nine saves for Guilford. Jenny Atmar (Houston, Texas, Bellaire) had four ground balls and five caused turnovers for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action next Saturday when they host Hood College at 1:00 p.m.
