UMW Women's Lacrosse Falls at F&M in NCAA Quarterfinals, 16-3

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-3 decision at fourth-ranked Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse tournament, closing its season with a record of 14-6.

The Eagles fell behind early, as both defenses opened well. The Eagles trailed, 5-0, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half. UMW then scored with Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) netting a pair goals, and UMW trailed, 7-2 at halftime.

The Diplomats took over in the second half, scoring nine straight goals, and holding the Eagles scoreless until freshman Sara Donatich (Melville, N.Y., Walt Whitman) scored with 25 seconds remaining in the game to pull the final score to 16-3.

F&M outshot the Eagles, 25-16, and had 30 ground balls to 25 for the visitors. The Eagles failed on seven clear attempts. Freshman Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga., Walton) had five saves and Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) two for UMW in goal.

Franklin & Marshall will move on to the final four next week in Gettysburg, Pa.
