UMW Women's Lax Advances to NCAA Tournament 3rd Round with 19-16 Win Over Etown

Attackers Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) and Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) each scored four goals and added one assist and attacker Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) registered one goal and seven assists to lead the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 19-16 win over Elizabethtown College on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster, Pa. The Eagles improve to 14-5 overall, and will advance to face host Franklin & Marshall College on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to next weekend's Division III Final Four.

The Eagles jumped ahead early, scoring the game's first three goals, and never trailed. Brittany Butler (Easton, Conn., Joel Barlow), Lauren Callison, and Erin Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Bishop Sullivan) opened the scoring before Elizabethtown answered with two goals to cut the deficit to one. But the Eagles then scored four straight, including a pair from Kennedy, to lead, 7-2, with 11:35 remaining in the half.

Freshman Keller Torrey (Roswell, Ga., Centennial) added two late goals and Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) one as the Eagles led, 9-4, at halftime.

Elizabethtown was able to close the gap to 12-9 in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but the Eagles netted four straight goals to assume a 16-9 lead with 16:52 remaining in the game. The teams traded goals until the last four minutes, when the Blue Jays scored the final four scores of the game to make the final 19-16.

Mary Washington outshot Elizabethtown, 35-34, and had 29 ground balls to 25 for the Blue Jays. UMW midfielder Jenny Atmar (Houston, Texas, Bellaire) had six ground balls, eight draw controls, and five caused turnovers for the Eagles. Freshman Kathryn Stiltz (Marietta, Ga., Walton) had eight saves in the UMW net.

The Eagles advance to face host Franklin & Marshall on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
