Kennedy's Seven Goals Lead #17 UMW Women's Lax Past St. Mary's, 16-12

Sophomore All-American Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) scored seven goals to lead the 17th ranked University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 16-12 victory at St. Mary's College on Tuesday in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 3-1 on the season, and 1-0 in league play, while the Seahawks fall to 0-4.

The Eagles jumped ahead early, scoring the first four goals of the game. Sophomore Lauren Callison (Stevensville, Md., Kent Island) opened the scoring, followed by a pair of Kennedy goals. Freshman Sara Donatich (Melville, N.Y., Walt Whitman) then scored with 19:54 remaining to up the lead to 4-0. After a pair of Seahawk goals, UMW reeled off four more tallies, with Kennedy scoring twice, and Jenny Atmar (Houston, Texas, Bellaire) and Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) adding solo goals. The Seahawks then scored four straight to close the half with UMW leading, 8-6.

St. Mary's was able to close the gap to one at 10-9 with 23:23 remaining. But the Eagles scored the next three goals (by Kennedy, Donatich, and Kimmelman) to regain a more comfortable lead at 13-9. The Eagles closed the game by scoring three of the final five goals of the game.

Kimmelman had three goals and two assists, and junior Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) added four assists for UMW. Donatich had two goals and two assists, and Callison had two goals and one assist. St. Mary's was led by Lauriann Parker's four goals.

The Eagles led in shots, 40-32, and in ground balls, 33-30. Freshman goalie Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) had nine saves in the Eagle goal. Midifelder Jenny Atmar had one goal, nine ground balls, and four draw controls, and midfielder Ellen Bikowski (Fairfax, Va., Bishop O'Connell) added four ground balls, four caused turnovers, and three draw controls.

Mary Washington will visit Hood College on Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
