UMW Women's Lax Falls at #2 Gettysburg in Season Lidlifter, 19-9

GETTYSBURG, PA - The second-ranked Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team used the strength of a 10-3 first half scoring advantage to top the University of Mary Washington, 19-9, on Thursday in the Eagles' season opener.  The Eagles fall to 0-1 on the young season.

In a game played in cold and windy conditions, the Eagles stayed close early, trailing 4-3 with 17:07 remaining in the first half. After Gettysburg scored first, sophomore Catherine Kennedy (Baltimore, Md., Baltimore Lutheran) scored the first of her five goals to tie the score. After Gettysburg went up, 3-1, sophomore Allie Kimmelman (Burke, Va., Robinson) netted her first goal of the year to cut the deficit to one. Junior Katie Wallis (Cypress, Texas, Cy-Creek) kept the Eagles within range at 4-3. From there, Gettysburg ended the half with six straight goals to take command.

The Eagles netted the first two goals of the second half on a pair of Kennedy scores, and after the Bullets answered with two more, Kennedy scored again to cut the deficit to 12-6, but that's as close as UMW would come. Sophomore Jenny Atmar, Kennedy, and Lauren Callison capped the scoring for UMW.

In addition to Kennedy's five goals and one assist, Kimmelman had one score and two assists for the Eagles, who were outshot, 36-24. Each team had 31 ground balls. Freshman Leigh Ann Redefer (Lewes, Del., Cape Henlopen) had nine saves in nets for the Eagles. Gettysburg was led by Nina Emala's five goals. Kristen Krammer had 11 saves for the Bullets.

Mary Washington will take on Roanoke College on March 1 in Disney, Fla. at 10:00 a.m.
