ASHLAND, Va. – Christopher Newport University claimed the top two honors on the student-athlete side, while Washington and Lee's Pete Gyscek earned the highest accolade on the coaching side as the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2019 College Division Women's Golf All-State honors Friday morning. CNU's Erica Whitehouse was named the Player of the Year, while Captain freshman Shreya Ganta earned Rookie of the Year honors. This is the first year VaSID has named an All-State team in the College Division for Women's Golf. Previously, the University Division and the College Divisions announced one combined team.

Whitehouse, a Mechanicsville, Va. native, earned Honorable Mention All-American status from the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA). It is a remarkable accomplishment in just her second season, which matches the number of seasons the Captains program has existed. Only one other Division III program has achieved an All-American in its second year – Millikin University around the turn of the century. The team's first All-American, Whitehouse finished in a tie for ninth at the 2019 Division III National Championship. The sophomore had a stroke average of 76.32 this season and was named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year. She closed out her second year ranked eighth in the GolfStat Player Rankings and earned three tournament wins this season.

For a young Captains program, the impressive streak continued with its second recruiting class. Freshman Shreya Ganta (Ashburn, Va.) earned the VaSID Rookie of the Year honor. Ganta earned First Team All-Conference honors in the CAC this season. She recorded three top-five finishes this season and ranked second on the team for scoring behind Whitehouse, tallying a 80.4 stroke average. Ganta helped push CNU into the WGCA Top 25 for the first time, with the Captains finishing 20^th in the country in the final Golfstat rankings.

Gyscek, who coaches both the men's and women's teams at Washington and Lee, earns the inaugural Coach of the Year honor after earning the same accolade last year for the men's side. For his work in Women's Golf in 2019, he was named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the second year in a row, after sharing the title last year. W&L finished tied for 11^th at the NCAA Championships this season, a program best. The Generals also finished 17^th in the final GolfStat rankings. W&L won its third overall ODAC title and second in as many years in 2019 as well.

The Generals and the Captains represented the entirety of the All-State First Team with Whitehouse and Ganta being joined by W&L's Griffin Foultz, Laurie Jones and Beth Ann Townsend.

The All-State Second team had one Captain represented as well – Katie Thome. Thome was joined by two Marymount Saints -- Alessandra Bertacche and Denis Isabel Trojillo. The team was rounded out with Bridgewater's Amanda Kelley and University of Mary Washington's Andrea Dill.
