UMW Women's Hoops Outlasted by Norfolk State, 99-43

Although it was close in the first quarter, Mary Washington women's basketball (10-5) was outlasted by Norfolk State (Div. I) on Monday night in Norfolk, Va., 99-43.

The Eagles were within as many as six points, 15-9, to the defending MEAC champions at the 3:54 mark in the first quarter when Ashley Martin's layup cut into the Spartans' lead. But from there, it got out of hand for UMW, who trailed by 11 at the end of the first quarter.

UMW shot 14-of-46 (30.4%) and was 2-for-15 from deep in the loss. Norfolk State, though, got the better of the Eagles' defense at it shot 35-of-67 and was 8-of-21 from deep. Mary Washington was outrebounded by 10, 39-29, but grabbed eight offensive boards.

Megan Baxter led the way for Mary Washington with eight points, adding a pair of 3-pointer's.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday night in Fredericksburg as they host Salisbury. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
