No. 20 Mary Washington Women's Basketball Dominates Averett, 65-35

No. 20 Mary Washington women's basketball (5-1) had little trouble handling Averett on Tuesday night as it returns to Fredericksburg with a 65-35 victory over the Cougars in Danville, Va.

Despite a slow start -- Averett outscored UMW by three points in the first quarter -- the Eagles turned the jets on in the second quarter as they outscored Averett, 22-11, and never looked back in their victory. Following their outburst at the end of the first half, Mary Washington followed that up with one of its better defensive periods of the year as it limited Averett to just four points in the third quarter. The Eagles finished up the evening in the fourth quarter strong as well, yielding just nine points in the period.

Offensively, UMW was led by Jordan Carpenter's 15 points and 12 offensive rebounds -- she recorded 18 total -- and Jenna Steadman's 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Of the 11 Eagles that checked into the game, 10 of them scored at least a single point.

Mary Washington went 20-for-60 on Tuesday night from the floor and made four 3-pointer's in the victory, while making 21 of its 29 free throws. Averett, meanwhile, made five field goals on 51 attempts (9.8%) and was just 2-of-19 from deep.

The Eagles grabbed 64 boards -- 23 on the offensive end -- and forced 18 turnovers with 14 points coming off of those.

Mary Washington is back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Southern Virginia. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
